Former Site of the Central Rear Storage Facility at Zhugaozhai

The former site of the Central Rear Storage Facility at Zhugaozhai is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The former site of the Central Rear Storage Facility at Zhugaozhai is located in Ping’an Village, Yinjing Town, about ninety-five li northeast of Yudu County. Zhugaozhai is a karst limestone hill that rises abruptly from the flat ground and resembles an upright bamboo pole when viewed from afar. The cave entrance of Zhugaozhai faces south and north, and inside the hill, several natural stone chambers are interconnected, with the largest central chamber being the deepest and widest, capable of holding a thousand people. In early July 1930, Mao Zedong and Zhu De led the Fourth Red Army on their way from Changting, Fujian, and made a special stop to inspect the stone caves at Zhugaozhai, deciding to designate the site as the Central Rear Storage Facility.

One day in June 1931, a Nationalist regiment that had retreated from Ningdu invaded the Central Rear Storage Facility at Zhugaozhai in an attempt to destroy the site. The Independent Regiment’s Second Company soldiers and local villagers, relying on the natural defenses of Zhugaozhai, bravely and tenaciously repelled the enemy’s attack and successfully defended the storage facility. A small story also took place at Zhugaozhai: at the time, Zhu De, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, passed through Yinjing, Yudu, and wanted to visit Zhugaozhai. The Red Guards stationed there did not recognize Zhu De and asked him for a travel pass. As Zhu De had arrived in a hurry without one, the Red Army soldiers did not allow him to enter.
