Shangbao Ancestral Hall Cluster

The Shangbao Ancestral Hall Cluster is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangxi Province.

The Shangbao Ancestral Hall Cluster is situated about forty kilometers northeast of the county seat in Shangbao Village, Ma’an Township. It is the ancestral temple of the Zhong family of Baoxi, composed of eighteen interconnected ancestral halls of varying sizes. Five of them are currently well preserved: the Zhong Family Ancestral Hall, Donggang Ancestral Hall, Beimao Ancestral Hall, Doushan Ancestral Hall, and Beishan Ancestral Hall. The complex was first built in the late Ming Dynasty, with subsequent maintenance and additions carried out during the Qing reigns of Kangxi, Qianlong, Guangxu, and in the Republican period. Among the halls, the main ancestral hall “Shide Hall” is the largest, featuring three courtyards and five halls, while the other branch halls each have one courtyard and two halls. They are distributed on both sides of the main hall, covering a total area of about 3,000 square meters. The cluster includes both “dedicated worship” halls and “residential-worship” halls. Except for the Dexuan Ancestral Hall, which faces south, all other halls face east. The structures are all built with brick and wood, featuring Dougong (bracket sets) and beam-frame construction, flush gable roofs, horse-head walls, and plain plastered walls. Most front halls are adorned with richly decorated caisson ceilings. Some gates feature ornamental archways decorated with brick carvings and plaster reliefs of figures and floral patterns, while others have eaves-corridor style entrances. The ensemble showcases a typical architectural style of Hakka culture in southern Jiangxi. On March 9, 2018, the Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government designated it as a provincial-level cultural heritage site.

Shangbao Village: Located in the northeastern part of Ma’an Township, Yudu County, beside National Highway 319, Shangbao Village features flat terrain, fertile soil, crisscrossing irrigation channels, abundant water sources, and picturesque surroundings where mountains and rivers complement each other.

Over the centuries, the Zhong clan has lived together in Shangbao Village, relying on the clan system to unite members and maintain social order. Vestiges of clan activities can be found throughout the village, especially the family genealogies and the numerous Shangbao ancestral halls scattered across the lanes—rare and remarkable cultural landmarks. In July 2003, the Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government listed Shangbao Village as one of the province’s first batch of historical and cultural villages.
