Former Site of the Political Department of the Fourth Red Army and Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong

The former site of the Political Department of the Fourth Red Army and the former residence of Comrade Mao Zedong is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The former site of the Political Department of the Fourth Red Army and the former residence of Comrade Mao Zedong is located at No. 12 Jianguo Road, Jiefang Neighborhood Committee, Gongjiang Town, Yudu County, Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province. Originally a private residence of the Guan family, it was built in the early years of the Republic of China. The site is a two-story brick-and-wood structure facing west with an eastward orientation, featuring a quadrangle courtyard layout. It spans 22 meters in width, 14.6 meters in depth, and stands 6.5 meters high, covering a total area of 321.2 square meters. On April 8, 1929, Comrades Mao Zedong and Zhu De led the Fourth Red Army to occupy Yudu for the first time. The Political Department of the Fourth Red Army was stationed here, with Mao Zedong, Secretary of the Front Committee, residing in the right wing room. During their stay in Yudu, the Fourth Red Army helped establish the first county-level red political power in southern Jiangxi—the Yudu County Workers’, Peasants’ and Soldiers’ Revolutionary Committee. While stationed in Yudu, the Political Department issued 134 propaganda slogans on April 17 and also transmitted an instruction letter from the Special Committee of the Hunan-Jiangxi Border Area. This site commemorates the early revolutionary activities of Mao Zedong during the establishment of the Central Revolutionary Base Area and holds significant cultural relic value. It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Yudu County on September 24, 1982. On March 9, 2018, it was announced as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province.
