Huangcuo Beach is the most natural and cleanest beach along the entire Island Ring Road. If you want to get up close to the sea in Xiamen, this is your best choice. In addition, Huangcuo Beach is an excellent spot to watch the sunrise, where you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise, making it a great place for photos and walks in the early morning. Huangcuo was once an ordinary fishing village by the sea, just 14 nautical miles across from Kinmen Island — though Kinmen is not visible from here. In the early 1960s, Huangcuo was a military zone. Now, it’s an ordinary yet lovely sandy beach. Of course, you shouldn’t judge it too harshly; most of Xiamen’s waters are inland seas, and they can’t compare to those in Sanya. The water here isn’t as blue, and the sand isn’t as fine, soft, or white. That said, the sea here is cleaner than near Gulangyu Island or by Xiamen University. The coastline of Huangcuo Beach is home to the famous Island Ring Road, a green corridor. The pedestrian path along the seaside is paved with colorless asphalt and red pebbles, making it a popular spot for locals’ morning jogs. There is also a dedicated lane for vehicles and cyclists along the coast (cars pay a fee, bicycles are free), and cycling or walking along this path is a delightful experience. Not far ahead is the large slogan sign that reads “One Country, Two Systems, Reunite China,” which is a landmark on the Island Ring Road. Many people choose to take photos here. Interestingly, on the nearby island of Little Kinmen across the strait, there's a corresponding sign that says “—, Reunite China.” Most cyclists turn back at this point and don’t continue further.
