Jimei University

Jimei University is located in Xiamen, Fujian Province. It is a key university under Fujian Province’s development plan, jointly built by the Ministry of Transport and Fujian Province, the State Oceanic Administration and Fujian Province, as well as Fujian Province and Xiamen City. The university has doctoral degree authorization and enrolls students nationwide.

The university’s origins trace back to the Teachers’ College and the Departments of Aquatic Products and Business established in 1918 and 1920 respectively by Jimei School, founded by the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee. With nearly a century of history, Jimei University was formed in 1994 through the merger of Jimei Normal College, Jimei Navigation College, Jimei College of Finance and Economics, Xiamen Fisheries College, and Fujian Institute of Physical Education. Guided by its motto “Sincerity and Fortitude,” the university upholds the educational philosophy of “founding the university on the spirit of Tan Kah Kee and cultivating talent with sincerity and fortitude,” earning widespread recognition both in China and abroad.

The university currently has 21 colleges and 69 undergraduate programs, covering nine disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, management, and art. It has developed a comprehensive academic structure encompassing these fields. There are eight first-level provincial key disciplines (including two featured key disciplines), one postdoctoral research station in aquatic sciences, and two first-level doctoral programs in aquatic sciences and naval architecture & ocean engineering. Additionally, there are nine first-level master's degree programs in aquatic sciences, naval architecture & ocean engineering, food science & engineering, transportation engineering, applied economics, physical education, mathematics, Chinese language & literature, and biology (covering 56 second-level master's programs). The university also offers 30 master's professional degree fields across four categories: agriculture, engineering, education, and taxation.

The university has over 2,300 staff members, including more than 1,500 full-time teachers and over 800 with senior professional titles. Among them are eight experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, one national-level candidate of the “Ten Thousand Talents Program,” one Minjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, six guest professors, and 85 individuals selected for high-level talent programs in Fujian Province such as Outstanding Talent, Distinguished Science & Technology Talent, High-Level Innovation Talent, Leading Talent in Scientific & Technological Innovation, Leading Talent in Philosophy & Social Sciences, and Youth Science & Technology Award. There are also four university scientific innovation teams in Fujian Province. The discipline of Aquaculture has been designated as a Fujian Provincial Talent Highland for Enterprises and Institutions.

The university currently enrolls over 27,000 students, including more than 26,000 full-time undergraduates and over 1,200 graduate students. It houses three national-level comprehensive reform pilot programs for majors, six national-level “Excellence” talent training programs, four national-level featured majors, one national-level teaching team, two national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, one national-level virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and one national-level off-campus practice education base for college students. At the provincial level, there are 11 featured major construction projects and 11 comprehensive reform pilot programs, eight provincially distinctive service-industry majors, four pilot programs for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, seven provincial teaching teams, 15 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and one provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching center. Students have consistently achieved outstanding results in major competitions such as the National “Challenge Cup” Competition, Mathematical Modeling Contests, Electronic Design Competitions, the Olympics, and national sports events. Graduates are highly regarded by employers, with an employment rate consistently above 90%.
