Hidden away in Xiamen’s last poetic enclave—Huaxin Road. Built in 1957, it was a specially designated area where patriotic overseas Chinese, responding to the nation’s call to return and help build the country, were allowed to settle. Around 50 villas were constructed over time, forming an old villa complex featuring French, Swiss, German, and other architectural styles. With their red brick and white walls, verdant little yards, and bougainvillea spilling over walls, stroll along the quiet and elegant streets to soak in the atmosphere of a bygone era. Huaxin Road is also known as the “Overseas Chinese New Village.” Established in 1957 when patriotic overseas Chinese who had ventured to Southeast Asia responded to the national call to return and contribute to the country’s development, Xiamen Municipal Government allocated this area for them to settle. Over 50 villas were built for the returning overseas Chinese and later expanded to surrounding streets, eventually forming a concentrated cluster of nearly 100 historic villas in the city center, encircling Zhongshan Park. Some of these villas have gradually been transformed into quaint private restaurants, coffee bars, guesthouses, studios, and more—all of which add layers of charm, romance, and flavor to Xiamen’s urban character.
