Gulang Stone

Gulang Stone is a rock on Gulangyu Island. During the Tang and Song dynasties, it was referred to as "Yuan Sha Zhou" or "Yuan Zhou Zi," named so because the island is oval-shaped with sandy beaches all around, a fitting description based on its appearance. At that time, the island was covered in large rocks and lush green grass, yet completely uninhabited, giving it a rather desolate feel.

On Meihua Beach in the southwestern part of Gulangyu, along the vast sea, there are three to five reefs, one of which stands about six to seven meters tall, with a large hole in the middle eroded by the sea waves, resembling a gate.

It is currently believed that the ancient sea waves repeatedly crashed against this rock on the beach, and over time, the constant pounding wore a hole through the stone, eventually forming this arch-like opening. This unique rock, coupled with poetic legends, makes Gulang Stone even more fascinating.
