Huaqiao University

Huaqiao University is a prestigious institution of higher learning in China. Founded in 1960, its campuses are located in Xiamen and Quanzhou, two well-known hometowns of overseas Chinese in Fujian Province. The university is directly under the administration of the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.

Huaqiao University is a comprehensive national key university. Over its more than 50 years of educational history, Chinese leaders such as Zhou Enlai, Li Xiannian, Xi Jinping, Hu Jintao, Deng Yingchao, and others have provided important directives for the university’s development.

Huaqiao University adheres to the educational principle of “facing overseas and the regions of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan,” upholds the mission of “serving overseas Chinese and spreading Chinese culture,” and follows the philosophy of “integrating Chinese and international perspectives while cultivating both virtue and talent.” National leaders Liao Chengzhi and Ye Fei served as the university’s first and second presidents, respectively.

Huaqiao University was among the first universities in New China to implement a board of trustees system. The Board of Trustees is composed of distinguished figures, experts, and leaders from overseas Chinese communities, Hong Kong and Macau compatriots, returned overseas Chinese, and other sectors. Notable former chairs include Zhuang Xiquan, Chen Mingyi, and Song Defu. The current chair is Wang Gang, former member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, former member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, former Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The honorary chair is Edmund Ho Hau Wah, former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and former Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region.

The university comprises 35 colleges, 140 research institutes, centers, and laboratories; offers 21 doctoral degree programs, 111 master’s degree programs, and 20 professional master’s degree programs; and has 94 undergraduate majors. It spans 12 academic disciplines including Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management, and Art. This forms an integrated academic system that combines the humanities and sciences, blends engineering and technology, connects engineering with management, and promotes coordinated development. Currently, three of its disciplines rank in the top 1% of the ESI global rankings, placing the university 75th among higher education institutions nationwide. In the 2015 national social science fund project results, the university secured funding for 21 projects, ranking 34th among all universities. Huaqiao University currently has 41 national and provincial key disciplines. It also houses 55 national and provincial-level teaching and research platforms, including a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, a Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, an Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council Research Base for Overseas Chinese Theory, a Tourism Safety Research Base under the China Tourism Academy, a Fujian Province “2011 Collaborative Innovation Center,” a Fujian Provincial Social Science Research Base, a Fujian Provincial University Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base, postdoctoral research stations, a Fujian Provincial Business Research Base, provincial key laboratories, provincial engineering technology research centers, provincial university key laboratories, provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, and provincial graduate education innovation bases. The total area of the university spans 2.268 million square meters, with a building area of 976,000 square meters. Its collection includes 4 million volumes of various books and materials.
