Gulangyu Guanfu Museum

The Guanfu Museum is the first private museum in China founded by Mr. Ma Weidu, and the one on Gulangyu is its regional branch. The Xiamen branch mainly exhibits ceramics, furniture, and some handicrafts. On both sides of the screen wall in Shuzhuang Garden, there were originally two moon gates; the one on the right has now become the entrance to the Guanfu Museum. The museum has eight exhibition halls, and its interior decoration, exhibit arrangement, and lighting effects all create a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Mr. Ma’s collection mostly consists of heirloom treasures. You can see dozens of exquisitely beautiful pieces of classical Chinese furniture: a huanghuali canopy bed, a Wanli cabinet, a pair of dragon-phoenix auspicious cloud-patterned armchairs, a beechwood bridal chamber bed, long tables, a mahogany throne chair, a half-table, an ironwood painting desk, as well as a row of taishi chairs and round-back chairs. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed inside. The museum’s prized collection is a set of Liao Dynasty furniture: a railing-style arhat bed, a kang table, a chess table, and two lantern-hanging chairs.
