Chuncao Hall

Built in 1933, Chuncao Hall was the residence of Xu Chuncan, the first president of Xiamen’s Architectural Trade Union. Designed personally by Xu, the building is perched on a cliff and resembles a Western-style villa in appearance, though it is actually a modern Chinese residence.

What distinguishes Chuncao Hall from other villas on Gulangyu is its use of unique southern Fujian granite for the wall foundations, columns, and porch pillars—especially with the deliberate preservation of the granite’s rough surface, complemented by red brick pointing in clear mortar. At first glance, it conveys both a natural, rugged solidity and the innate color beauty of southern Fujian architecture. The building was sited with great ingenuity, offering a broad viewing angle where you can open the windows to sea views and sunset vistas.
