Gulangyu Water Training Platform

The Gulangyu Water Training Platform is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.

The Water Training Platform is the historical site where Zheng Chenggong trained his naval forces in preparation for reclaiming Taiwan. On the massive cliff face, the four characters "闽海雄风" (Heroic Spirit of the Min Sea) are round, full, vigorous, and powerful. On another large rock to the front right, there is an inscription of a five-character quatrain handwritten by Zheng Chenggong: “礼乐衣冠第，文章孔孟家。南山开寿城，东海酿流霞。” It is said that this poem was carved in imitation of Zheng Chenggong’s handwriting, with two seals below: “Zheng Sen’s Private Seal” and “Cheng Gong.” Standing on the Water Training Platform, one can’t help but imagine the grand scene of Zheng Chenggong commanding with composure here, under billowing flags on the river, with hundreds of boats vying for position, and brave soldiers eager to fight for the unification of the nation.

To its upper right is a recessed regular script inscription in seal characters from the 7th year of the Republic of China (1918), signed by Huang Zhongxun, reading “Zheng Yanzheng Shui Cao Tai Gu Xu” (Former Site of Zheng Yanzheng’s Water Training Platform). Each character is 0.30 meters long and 0.28 meters wide. Since Zheng Chenggong was granted the title of Prince of Yanping, Huang Zhongxun referred to him as Zheng Yanzheng in the inscription.

Zheng Chenggong, originally named Sen and childhood name Fusong, with the courtesy name Damu and pseudonym Mingyan, was born on July 14, 1624, in Shirin, Nan’an, to a family from Hirado, Nagasaki, Japan. His father was Zheng Zhilong, and his mother was the daughter of the Tagawa family from Hirado, Nagasaki. In the third year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1630), at the age of 7, he returned from Japan to Anping (now Anhai Town, Jinjiang) to study, taking the name Sen.

At the age of 11, Zheng Chenggong once wrote an astonishing line in response to a topic given by his tutor, “Sweeping, greeting, advancing, and retreating”: “The conquests of Tang and Wu are no more than sweeping; the abdications of Yao and Shun are merely advancing and retreating.” Later, he studied the classics, history, and military strategy diligently...
