Shishi Chan Temple

Shishi Chan Temple, located at the foot of Daimeishan Mountain in Xiayang Village, Xinyang Subdistrict, Haicang District, enshrines Sakyamuni Buddha. According to the *Haicheng County Annals*, it was built in the third year of the Tongguang era of the Later Tang Dynasty (925 AD), while existing ancient stone inscriptions suggest its founding year as the second year of the Chuigong era of the Tang Dynasty (686 AD), making it one of the thousand-year-old temples of southern Fujian. It underwent five renovations during the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing, and Republican periods, reaching its largest scale in the Ming Dynasty with “three tiers of halls and sixty-four monastic quarters.” Only the main hall remains today, built during the Daoguang era and renovated in the Guangxu era, surviving to this day.
