Min-Tai Town

The Min-Tai Town scenic area is located in Chengnei Village, Houxijie Town, Jimei District, Xiamen City. It sits against mountains and faces the sea, with a view across the water to Xiamen Island. According to expert research, in the first year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty, the Qing government implemented the “Coastal Evacuation and Maritime Ban” policy and ordered General Shi Lang to oversee the construction of a fortress town, which was named “Chengnei,” also known as “Xiacheng.” The ancient fortress town, which dates back over 350 years, is elliptical in shape, originally 150 meters wide from east to west and 200 meters long from north to south. Four city gates were established on the east, west, south, and north sides, each guarded by an ancient temple: the Guanyin Temple, the King’s Temple, the City God Temple, and the Xuan Tian Shang Di Temple, respectively. A street called Xiacheng Old Street runs through the town from north to south, with remnants of its historic appearance still visible. The site preserves Xiamen’s only remaining ancient city gate, the Gongchen Gate, as well as a five-section southern Fujian-style mansion that dates back to the early to mid Qing Dynasty. Its simple and elegant exterior has stood the test of time.
