Ancient Summer Cave

Ancient Summer Cave is a uniquely shaped cave, where towering granite boulders appear to have fallen from the sky and are supported by the cave’s stone walls, creating an overwhelming sense of pressure as if Mount Tai were pressing down — truly a breathtaking sight. The four Chinese characters “Ancient Summer Cave” were inscribed by Shi Shijie, a Taiwanese literatus from the late Qing Dynasty. The cave is bright, dry, well-ventilated, and refreshingly cool. Passing through the Ancient Summer Cave and turning left, you’ll find an elegant little pavilion, with slender supporting beams, that uses the rock as its terrace. It’s called the “Umbrella Pavilion,” providing visitors with shade and shelter from the rain. On the adjacent rock top, there is a stone basin known as the “Immortal’s Foot-Washing Basin,” which holds water year-round, alongside what appears to be the footprints of an immortal. In fact, both the “Immortal’s Print” and the “Foot-Washing Basin” are erosional landforms shaped by sea waves. In the distant geological past, this area was still under the erosion of ocean waves. Later, due to tectonic uplift, these coastal erosion features ended up appearing on the mountaintop.
