Sunlight Rock, also called Longtou Mountain, faces Tiger Head Mountain in Xiamen across the sea. A dragon and a tiger guard Xiamen Harbor, known as the "Dragon and Tiger Guarding the River." There was originally a "Xu Pavilion" here, which has long been destroyed. Shi Guoqiu from Taiwan wrote an essay titled "Record of Xu Pavilion," describing Sunlight Rock as “surrounded by mountains and embraced by the sea, commanding the foremost gateway to the southeast. The water merges with the sky, and mighty waves bathe the sun, all presenting wonders before the Buddhist temples.” The stone steps are flanked by massive rocks, forming solemn and towering cliffs. The sea breeze weaves through, instantly bringing a sense of "chill even in the height of summer," naturally derived from the "Dragon’s Lair in Egret River." "Height of summer" refers to midsummer, and the "Dragon’s Lair" is where dragons reside—according to legend, five dragons once lived on Gulangyu Island. This gate is the entrance to the "Longtou Mountain Stronghold," where Zheng Chenggong stationed his troops on Gulangyu. The round holes in the rock were drilled by soldiers to set up tents. The former 19th Route Army general of the Kuomintang, General Cai Tingkai, was moved by the scenery and composed a seven-character regulated poem: “With but one hand, I strive to mend heaven’s work; Defending Fujian, ancient and modern, remains the same. Though the ancient fort still stands today, at Sunlight Rock I recall the heroes.” He sang high praise for Zheng Chenggong. Mr. Cai Yuanpei also wrote a seven-character regulated poem: “Roaring winds command the sea tides, Commanding with composure, battle clouds rise high. Insects, sand, apes, and cranes may all perish in time, But noble spirit remains, forever undefiled.” “Insects, sand, apes, and cranes” refer to soldiers who died in battle.
