The Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall (Exhibition Hall of Tan Kah Kee’s Life and Deeds) is located in Jimei, Xiamen City, Fujian Province. It consists of his former residence, the Exhibition Hall of Tan Kah Kee’s Life and Career, the Jimei School History Exhibition Hall, the Exhibition Hall of Chen Jingxian’s Life and Deeds, the Jimei School History Exhibition Hall, the Exhibition Hall of Chen Jingxian’s Life and Deeds, the Returnee Hall, the Returnee Garden, the Jimei Ao Garden, and the Tan Kah Kee Park.

The former residence showcases Mr. Tan’s simple and unadorned lifestyle. The Exhibition Hall of His Life and Career presents the glorious life of the man. The School History Exhibition Hall highlights his achievements in education for the nation. The Returnee Hall was built according to the instructions of Zhou Enlai to fulfill Mr. Tan’s last wishes. The Returnee Garden features a bronze statue of Mr. Tan, erected in 1983. Tan Kah Kee Park houses the Liberation Monument, Mr. Tan’s mausoleum, and the Teachers’ and Education Honor Monument (shaped like a burning candle). The memorial site contains numerous exquisite bluestone reliefs that depict historical scenes and various trades, making it a veritable museum of stone carvings.

The entire complex utilizes rich historical materials and artifacts to highlight the glorious life of Tan Kah Kee: “doing business in Nanyang with deep love for his homeland,” “investing all in education with unyielding determination,” and “serving the nation with heartfelt patriotism and total dedication.” It fully showcases Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s noble qualities as the “Banner of Overseas Chinese and the Glory of the Nation.”

Tan Kah Kee (1874–1961), also known as Jia Geng, with the courtesy name Ke Ci, was born on September 12, 1874, in Jimei She, Rende, Tong’an County (now part of Jimei Town, Xiamen City). In 1882, during the eighth year of the Guangxu reign, he attended Nanxuan Private School. In the autumn of 1890, the sixteenth year of Guangxu, he crossed the sea to Singapore to assist his father in managing the Shun An Rice Store. In 1901, the twenty-seventh year of Guangxu, he funded 2,000 yuan to establish the “Tile Studio School” in Jimei and distributed the book Newly Compiled Proven Prescriptions across villages in Southern Fujian, performing many charitable acts and earning widespread public support.
