Former Site of the Xiamen General Labor Union

The Former Site of the Xiamen General Labor Union is a cultural heritage site protected by Fujian Province.

The Former Site of the Xiamen General Labor Union is located at No. 68 Tuidui Lane, Datong Road, Siming District. It is the only surviving building in Fujian Province that reflects the labor movement during the Great Revolution period, and also one of only four such surviving general union sites nationwide.

On January 24, 1927, Communist Party members such as Luo Yangcai and Yang Shining established the Xiamen General Labor Union here.

The congress elected Luo Yangcai and Yang Shining as the chairman and vice-chairman of the General Labor Union, passed the union’s constitution, and formed a workers' patrol squad. Shortly after its establishment, the union grew to over 20,000 members, established more than ten workers' party branches, and successfully led the “25 Percent Wage Increase” struggle to improve labor conditions. In the early hours of April 9 of the same year, the right-wing faction of the Kuomintang launched a coup, and Luo Yangcai and Yang Shining were arrested. On June 2, they were secretly executed in Fuzhou. Other labor movement leaders were either arrested, expelled, or placed on wanted lists, and the union organization suffered severe damage. From then on, the labor movement in Xiamen was forced to go underground.

The site faces south and was built in the 1920s. It is a Western-style red brick building with a main two-story structure and partial three-story sections, covering an area of 170 square meters, with a width of 13.6 meters and a depth of 15.2 meters. The building has a brick-and-wood structure, and the floor was reconstructed with concrete during renovations in 1999. The site is now home to the Xiamen Workers’ Movement Exhibition Hall.

It was designated as one of the first batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units by the People's Government of Fujian Province in 1961.
