Modern Architectural Complex of Gulangyu

The Modern Architectural Complex of Gulangyu is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit — “Modern Architectural Complex of Gulangyu” is situated on Gulangyu Island, southwest of Xiamen Island in Xiamen City, Fujian Province. It is composed of 10 sites with a total of 13 buildings, including the former site of the U.S. Consulate, the former site of the Japanese Consulate, the former site of the HSBC Residence, the Catholic Church, the Trinity Church, the Anderson Church, the Bagua Building, the Xilin-Kangan Villa, the Yizu Mountain Villa, and Shuzhuang Garden. These structures encapsulate the modern development history of Gulangyu and serve as physical materials for studying China’s semi-colonial society.

(1) Former Site of the U.S. Consulate: The perimeter is extended 10 meters outward from the surrounding wall.

(2) Former Site of the Japanese Consulate: The northern boundary is along Lujiao Road, with 15-meter extensions to the east and west, incorporating adjacent buildings within the protected area, and connecting to the protected zone of the Catholic Church to the south.

(3) Former Site of HSBC: The western boundary is along Gulangyu New Road, with 10-meter extensions to the east, south, and north.

(4) Catholic Church: Extensions of 15 meters to the east, south, west, and north, with adjacent buildings included within the protected area.

(5) Trinity Church: Bounded by Anhai Road to the north, south, and east, and by Yongchun Road to the west.

(6) Anderson Church: Extensions of 15 meters to the east, south, west, and north, with the boundary at the junction with Jishan Road following the road itself.

(7) Bagua Building: The eastern and northern boundaries are along Gulangyu New Road, with 30-meter extensions to the west and south, and adjacent buildings included within the protected area.

(8) Xilin-Kangan Villa: Extensions of 10 meters to the east, south, west, and north, with adjacent buildings included within the protected area.

(9) Yizu Mountain Villa: Extensions of 15 meters to the east, south, west, and north.

(10) Shuzhuang Garden: The western boundary reaches the coastline, with 10-meter extensions from the surrounding wall to the east, south, and north.
