“Chaokuang” Inscription

The “Chaokuang” inscription is located on a sea-facing rock in Aotou Village, Xindian Town, on the southern side. It was inscribed in the 23rd year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1843) by Su Tingyu. The two characters “Chaokuang” are written in horizontal running regular script, with each character measuring approximately 0.48 meters in diameter. The smaller characters before and after bear the inscriptions “Daoguang Gui Mao” and “Written by Su Tingyu.”

Su Tingyu (1783–1852), styled Yunshan, also known as Aoshi, and in his later years as Tuishou, was a native of Aotou in Xiangfengli, Tong’an County. Orphaned at a young age, Su was determined to study and became a student of the Imperial College at the age of 20. In the 13th year of the Jiaqing reign (1808), he passed the imperial examination at the provincial level and became a Jinshi (advanced scholar) in the 19th year of Jiaqing (1814). He was appointed as a Shujishi (a compiled literary graduate) in the Hanlin Academy and later transferred to serve as a principal official in the Ministry of Justice. In the 6th year of the Daoguang reign (1826), he was promoted to Youwailang (vice ministerial secretary). The following year, he ranked first in the official evaluation and was elevated to Langzhong (division chief) in the Ministry of Justice.

Aotou Community: Aotou Village Committee: Located in the southern part of the town, it governs two natural villages: Aotou and Shangsu. It consists of 5 villager groups, with 251 households and a population of 967. During the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Aotou Bao in Xiangfengli. In 1943, it was under Aotou Bao in Zhennan Township. In 1950, it came under Aotou Township in the Fifth District. In 1955, it was placed under Hongzhong District, and in 1959, under Aotou Brigade in Xindian Commune. In 1984, it was renamed Aotou Village Committee under Xindian Township, and in 1987, it came under Xindian Town.
