Ancient Kiln Sites in Xiang'an

The ancient kiln sites in Xiang'an are a cultural tourism attraction.

There are numerous ancient kiln sites within Xiang'an, but after centuries of weathering, most have become ruins, no longer retaining their former glory. Many Tang and Song dynasty kiln sites have been discovered in areas such as Huangcuo, Dongshaowei, and Pingbian. Pottery fragments visible on the surface reveal the sophisticated ceramic firing techniques of the time and bear witness to Xiang'an’s long-standing prosperity and profound cultural heritage.

The Pingbian Kiln is located near the entrance of Pingbian Natural Village, Fangyang Village, Maxiang Town, on the southwestern side of the village (in the woods near the three-way intersection by the incense factory). It is a kiln site from the Tang dynasty, initially discovered in the early 1990s, and was re-examined in 1998, 2005, and during the third national cultural relics survey. The existing distribution area of relics covers approximately 200 square meters. Scattered across the woods and small paths are broken ceramic shards, as well as kiln tools such as support pillars and three-pronged spurs, with some accumulation areas reaching a thickness of 0.3 meters. The kiln mainly produced celadon ware, with bowl, jar, and pot shapes being predominant. During the 1998 investigation, a relatively intact large four-handled celadon jar was collected from the stratigraphic layer. However, due to the construction of an incense factory, road development, and farmland expansion, the kiln site has suffered severe damage.

Maxiang Town: Maxiang Town is a town under the jurisdiction of Xiang'an District. It boasts well-developed land and water transportation, situated at the transport hub connecting Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou. National Highway 324, the Xiamen-Quanzhou Expressway, and Xiang'an Boulevard all run through the town. The town center is 33 kilometers from Xiamen City and 55 kilometers from Quanzhou. It covers a total area of 66.87 square kilometers, comprising 27 administrative villages, 99 natural villages, and 7 community neighborhood committees, with a population of 80,000. It is one of the important hometowns of overseas Chinese and ancestral lands of Taiwanese people in southern Fujian.
