Qinxiang Xiaozhu

Qinxiang Xiaozhu, also known as the Study of Hong Xiaochun, is located at No. 236, North Cuandong Natural Village, Cuandong Community, Maxiang Town. Built in the 17th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1891), it faces southwest from the northeast and consists of two connected traditional residential blocks — the front and the rear sections. The front section has been rebuilt, while the space between the two sections is a courtyard that is 3.7 meters deep. The original square pavilion in the courtyard has collapsed. On the southeastern wall of the courtyard is a gate with a stone-carved plaque inscribed horizontally with “Qinxiang Xiaozhu” (Fragrant Retreat) and signed “Written by Xiaoshan in the Xinyou year of Guangxu.” The rear block is three bays wide (10.8 meters) and two bays deep (6.5 meters), with an interior height of 4.6 meters and a total floor area of 110.16 square meters, covering approximately 120 square meters in land area. It features a post-and-lintel timber frame, tiled roofing, a flush gable roof, and swallowtail ridges. This building is a traditional Minnan red-brick residence constructed with a combination of earth, wood, brick, and stone. Due to years of disrepair, it has gradually fallen into ruin. However, colorful painted murals of animals, flowers, birds, figures, and narrative scenes remain on the walls and gate of the rear section’s veranda, along with calligraphic works inscribed with phrases such as “Chong Jian” (Value Simplicity), “Le Dao” (Delight in the Way), and “Zun De” (Uphold Virtue).
