Yiyuan Garden on Gulangyu Island

Yiyuan Garden on Gulangyu Island is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

Yiyuan Garden on Gulangyu Island is located in Siming District, Xiamen City. It dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

Introduction: It was the former residence of Lin Henian, built in the 21st year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1895). The property consists of a villa-style complex with a garden gate, surrounding walls, and a main building and annex in Western architectural style. The main building is a three-story Western-style house constructed with red bricks, including an underground damp-proof layer. The annex is also a three-story red brick building. Lin Henian (1847–1901), a native of Anxi County, Fujian Province, served in the National History Academy starting in the 9th year of the Guangxu reign (1883). He was later appointed by imperial decree to handle tea tax and shipping donations as well as railway construction matters in Taiwan. Due to his outstanding performance, he was awarded the title of Dao (a high-ranking provincial official) and the additional honorary rank of Ancha Shi (censorate official). After Taiwan was ceded to Japan, Lin returned to Xiamen and built Yiyuan Garden as his residence.

Protected area: 10 meters beyond the perimeter walls to the east, south, and north, and extending to Fujian Road to the west.

In 2018, Yiyuan Garden on Gulangyu Island was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.
