Former Site of the Xiamen Customs Signal Tower

The former site of the Xiamen Customs Signal Tower is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

The former site of the Xiamen Customs Signal Tower is located on Gulangyu Island in Siming District, Xiamen City, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

Description: In the seventh year of the Tongzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1868), the Xiamen Customs set up a meteorological observation station (weather station) and a flag-raising signal station on the hillside at the southeastern tip of Gulangyu Island to assist in the navigation of ships entering and leaving Xiamen Port. Foreigners referred to it as the signal tower, while locals in Xiamen called it “Flag-Raising Hill.” The existing flag-raising platform was relocated here in the third year of the Guangxu reign (1877) from a small hill at Bailudong Temple.

Protected area: East to the office building of the signal tower, west and south to the base of the rock ridge, extending 30 meters northward.

In 2018, the former site of the Xiamen Customs Signal Tower was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People's Government of Fujian Province.
