Shangli Reservoir Dam

The Shangli Reservoir Dam is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

The Shangli Reservoir Dam is located in Shangli Community, Zengcuo’an, Siming District, Xiamen City, and dates back to the Republican era.

Description: In 1923, overseas Chinese industrialist Huang Yizhu and others founded the “Xiamen Commercial Water Supply Co., Ltd.” In 1925, the company built a dam to store water by utilizing the natural terrain at Shangli, establishing the Shangli Reservoir. The dam was constructed with granite strips, featuring an arc shape and running from northwest to southeast. It is approximately 300 meters long, with a maximum height of 40 meters and a dam crest width of 3 meters. The dam also features a continuous arch-shaped stone railing. A pump house is located in the middle of the dam, while German-made steel floodgates are installed at the base. The western side is equipped with inlet and outlet pipes. Embedded in the wall at the base of the dam is a foundation stone plaque inscribed in both Chinese and English, dated the 14th year of the Republic of China. The plaque is made of gray-green rock, measuring 0.57 meters in height and 0.85 meters in length. The dam was designed and built by Germany’s Siemens Company. A two-story Western-style office building is situated on the northwest side of the dam.

Protected area: 20 meters beyond the high-water mark to the east; 90 meters beyond the ends of the dam to the west and south; and 90 meters beyond the water plant office building to the north.

In 2018, the Shangli Reservoir Dam was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.
