Tong’an City Wall

The Tong’an City Wall is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.

The Tong’an City Wall is located on Sanxiu Road, Datong Subdistrict, Tong’an District, Xiamen City, dating back to the Song and Qing dynasties.

Introduction: Built between 1145 and 1148 during the Southern Song Dynasty (Shaoxing years), the earthen wall was replaced with stone in 1355 during the Yuan Dynasty (Zhizheng years). During the 1597 renovation in the Ming Dynasty (Wanli years), its perimeter was extended to 2,710 meters. The remaining sections of the wall run in a northeast–southwest direction, approximately 450 meters long, 3–5 meters high, with a top width of 3.8–5.1 meters and a base width of 4.5–6.5 meters. The outer structure is built with upright and horizontal stone slabs, while the interior is filled with red rammed earth, forming a trapezoidal cross-section that is narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. The southern section features protruding pier foundations, each 4.2 meters square, connected inward from the wall, with a remaining height of 3 meters.

In 2013, the Tong’an City Wall was designated as part of the eighth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Protected area: An additional 20 meters outward from the wall on all sides.

Datong Subdistrict: Datong Subdistrict covers an area of 19.51 square kilometers, with a registered population of 60,361. It includes 9 communities: Tongxin, Xi’an, Sanxiu, Houlu, Xibian, Chengxi, Fengshan, Beimen, and Xichi; and 9 village committees: Tianyang, Guzhuang, Chaoyuan, Dongshan, Dingxitou, Biyue, Dongzhai, Xiaxitou, and Kangxun.
