Zheng Chenggong’s Study Retreat is a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit in Xiamen.

Zheng Chenggong’s Study Retreat is located at Taiping Rock within the Wanshi Botanical Garden in Kaiyuan Subdistrict, Siming District. It is a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit dating back to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.

The protected area includes the entire rock formation where the “Stone Smile” inscription, the Octagonal Pavilion inscriptions, and the poetry of Zheng Pengyun are carved.

Zheng Chenggong, originally named Sen and childhood name Fusong, styled Damu and also known as Mingyan, was born on July 14, 1624, in Hirado, Nagasaki (Chikuzen Province, Japan) on the shore of Shiranami. His father was Zheng Zhilong and his mother was the daughter of the Tagawa family from Hirado, Nagasaki, Japan. In the third year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1630), when he was seven years old, he returned from Japan to Anping (now Anhai Town, Jinjiang) to study and was given the name Sen.

At the age of 11, Zheng Chenggong once wrote an essay on the topic “Sweeping, Greeting, Responding, Advancing, and Retreating” given by his tutor, composing the striking line: “The conquests of Tang and Wu were no more than sweeping; the abdications of Yao and Shun were no more than advancing and retreating.” He later devoted himself to the intensive study of the classics, history, and military strategy, … More details about Zheng Chenggong++
