Eastern Shaowei Kiln Site

The Eastern Shaowei Kiln Site is located in the northeast of Dongshaowei Village, Neicuo Town. The kiln site is distributed on the southwestern slope of Dongshaowei Reservoir and around Songcuo Village, covering an area of about 1 square kilometer. It was discovered in 1974. A large number of trumpet-shaped kiln tools, kiln bricks, triangular pottery pads, broken artifacts, and celadon fragments are scattered across the ground. The collected physical samples mainly include bowls with false ring feet, wide-mouthed pots, jars, and others, all coated with celadon glaze, featuring thick bodies and styles characteristic of the Tang Dynasty. On the eastern slope of Xiashangcuo Village, three oval-shaped kiln bases remain, with the more intact one measuring 5.7 meters in length and 2.3 meters in width at the midsection. The discovery of this kiln site pushes the upper limit of porcelain production in the Xiamen area back to the Tang Dynasty. During the re-examinations in 1999 and 2005, the surface accumulation at the kiln site had been eroded and washed away by rainwater, and the accumulation layers and kiln bases within the site were severely damaged due to hill excavation and soil extraction.
