Banpu Ancient Houses (Hong Family Residences in Liangshan)
The Banpu Ancient Houses (Hong Family Residences in Liangshan) are a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.
The Hong Family Residences in Liangshan are located in Banpu Natural Village, Liangshan Village, Yingdu Town, Nan’an City, and date back to the Qing Dynasty.
Description: The Hong Family Residences consist of buildings such as Dingdianjin, Fengjun Ancestral Hall, Siyuan Residence, and Ruolian Residence. Constructed during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1736–1795), they are built with brick, stone, and wood, all representing typical traditional Southern Fujian architecture. Dingdianjin: Facing west, it consists of a pond, stone courtyard, lower section, central courtyard with side rooms, upper section, southern wing room, northern wing room, and chessboard house, covering a construction area of 750 square meters. The main building has a five-bay width, a mixed post-and-lintel and through-tenon wooden frame structure, and a flush-gable roof. Fengjun Ancestral Hall: Facing northwest, it includes a brick courtyard, lower section, central courtyard with corridors, and upper section, covering an area of 254 square meters. The main building has a five-bay width, a mixed post-and-lintel and through-tenon wooden frame, and a flush-gable roof. Siyuan Residence: Facing northeast, it comprises a brick courtyard, lower section, central courtyard with corridors, upper section, and southern wing room, with a construction area of 252 square meters. The main building has a five-bay width, a through-tenon wooden frame, and a flush-gable roof. Ruolian Residence: Facing southeast, it includes a brick courtyard, lower section, front central courtyard with side rooms, upper section, rear central courtyard with side rooms, rear section, and western wing room, covering an area of 568 square meters. The main building has a five-bay width, a through-tenon wooden frame, and a flush-gable roof. The Hong Family Residences in Liangshan are “shaped like a bow and ruler,” with the overall layout well preserved.
Protection boundary: Each individual structure is surrounded by a buffer zone extending 20 meters outward in all directions.
In 2018, the Hong Family Residences in Liangshan were designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.
Liangshan Village: Liangshan Village is located in the western part of Nan’an City. To the east, it reaches Donghouzhai, about 22 kilometers from downtown Nan’an City. To the west, it borders on the Eighteen Bends area and connects with Xiangyun. To the south, it extends to Tianma Mountain, about 3 kilometers from the town center. To the north, it neighbors Gushanzhai and borders Anxi County. The village covers an area of 8.8 square kilometers. It currently administers 9 natural villages, 19 villager groups, over 1,230 households, and a population of more than 5,350. Liangshan Village was formerly known as the 27th District of Yingnei in Nan’an County, Fujian Province.
