Guanshan Li Family Residences

The Guanshan Li Family Residences are a national key cultural relics protection unit.

The Guanshan Li Family Residences are located in Guanshan Village, Meishan Township, Nan’an City, dating from the Qing Dynasty to the Republican era.

Introduction: Constructed by Li family members residing in Southeast Asia who returned to their hometown between the Qing Dynasty and the Republican era, the site preserves ten relatively intact traditional structures: Shijie Mansion, Dinxin Mansion, Zhongxin Mansion, Xinxin Mansion, Gongcang Mansion, Chengqi Mansion, Xijin Mansion, Xigeng Mansion, Fengqian Mansion, and Jiannan Residence. Most of these buildings feature a single-courtyard two-section layout or a double-courtyard three-section layout with side wings, supported by post-and-lintel or mortise-and-tenon wooden frameworks, with flush gable roofs and swallowtail ridges. Among them, the most distinctive is the Fanzi Building, also known as the “Pond Lake Fanzi Building,” built in 1899 (the 25th year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty) by Li Gongcang. Covering a construction area of 528 square meters, the building faces southeast and is situated northwest, with two stories. Its exterior features bold lines and a strong Southeast Asian architectural style, while the interior is decorated in the Southern Fujian style, making it a prime example of East-West fusion. The Guanshan Li Family Residences not only showcase the mature architectural, carving, and cultural artistry of Southern Fujian’s red-brick residences but also reflect the blending of Southeast Asian and Western cultures in architecture and decoration.

Protected area: Each individual structure is surrounded by a protected zone extending 20 meters outward in all directions.

In 2018, the Guanshan Li Family Residences were designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural relics protection units by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

On October 7, 2019, the Guanshan Li Family Residences were included in the eighth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Guanshan Village: Located 2.5 kilometers from the township government seat, Guanshan Village is named after the first characters of Guanyin Village and Shan Yao Village. During the Republican era, it was part of Shan Yao Bao; after liberation, it belonged to Shan Yao Village. During the commune period, it was renamed Guanshan Brigade, which was later split into Guanshan and Guanyin Brigades in 1979. In 1984, it was renamed Guanshan Village Committee. The Guanshan Village Committee is headquartered in Shan Yao Village and consists of eight natural villages: Shan Yao, An Tou, Shan Shi, Genzhu Keng, Si Dou, Si Dou Zhong, Lun Tou Yang, and Tu Lou Hou.
