The Kuixia Architectural Complex

The Kuixia Architectural Complex is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

The Kuixia Architectural Complex is located in Kuixia Village, Shijing Town, Nan'an City, dating from the Qing Dynasty to the modern era.

Overview: Over a hundred traditional Southern Fujian-style buildings and Southeast Asian-influenced structures were built by the Lin clan of Kuixia during the late Qing Dynasty, the Republican era, and the early years of the People's Republic of China. Most of the buildings are staggered along both sides of the east-west oriented Kuixia Ancient Street, forming the streets and lanes of the ancient village. Well-preserved late Qing Dynasty buildings include five structures: the Lin Ancestral Hall, the Former Residence of Lin Wen-zhi, the Dai’an Mansion, the Sitiao Mansion, and the Yuansheng Mansion. These are all built with brick, stone, and wood, featuring either a single-entry two-courtyard three-bay or five-bay layout, with raised-beam or through-tenon wooden frameworks, flush gable roofs, and swallowtail ridges. Well-preserved Republican-era buildings include five structures: the Yingyuan Building, the Shaodong Building, the Quansheng Building, the Weixuan Building, and the Chunhui Building. These are mostly two- or three-story brick or stone structures, with exteriors of red brick, cement, or a combination, cement pillars, triangular gables, and flat roofs. Representative buildings from the early years of the People’s Republic of China include three structures: the Jiangxing Building, the Yian Residence, and the Liugu Building. These are mainly two-story brick and stone buildings, with floor plans of three or five bays. They provide physical evidence for the study of overseas Chinese residences in Southern Fujian during the late Qing Dynasty, the Republican era, and the early PRC.

Protection boundary: A 20-meter buffer zone extends outward from the perimeter of each individual structure.

In 2018, the Kuixia Architectural Complex was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the Fujian Provincial People’s Government.
