Xiangyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument
The Xiangyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is a cultural relic protection unit of Nan’an City, a classic red tourism attraction, a patriotic education base, and a national defense education base.
The Xiangyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument is located on Meige Mountain in Jin’an Village, Xiangyun Town, Nan’an City.
Xiangyun is a veteran revolutionary base area and an important stronghold of the CCP’s An-Nan-Tong Border Region. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the people of Xiangyun shed blood and sweat, advancing wave upon wave, making due contributions to the revolutionary cause. To commemorate the fallen heroes, in the 1950s, the People’s Government of Nan’an County approved and allocated funds to establish the “Xiangyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument,” which was completed in 1957. Due to the limited space, in 1992, with approval from the higher-level Party committee, the monument was relocated to the northern side of Meige Pass in Jin’an Village. The current site is accessible by a simple road, situated at a slightly higher elevation, offering an eastern view that overlooks the Daling mountain-looping cement road and the layered, lush terraced fields and scattered residences of Xiangshan Village in their entirety; to the west lies the town area of Xiangyun, with its dense clusters of buildings and houses. “The green mountains are fortunate to cradle the loyal bones.” Within the monument lie the remains of martyrs such as Liang Changzhi, and it has now become a cemetery for revolutionary martyrs.
Xiangyun was one of the strongholds of the CCP’s An-Tong-Nan Special Committee and the Fifth Battalion of the Second Detachment of the Minnan Brigade of the Fujian-Southwest Military District of the Chinese Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army. From 1934 to 1935, the Fifth Battalion of the Second Detachment, centered in Longmen, Anxi County, carried out land revolution activities. Xiangyun’s Qianshan Village (now Xiangyun Village) organized a secret peasant association and planted the red flag atop Zhaishanwei. Revolutionary slogans such as “Down with the local tyrants, distribute the land!” and “All power to the Soviets!” were posted all over Xiangyun Market and various streets, causing great panic among reactionary forces. At that time, Peng Dezheng, who would later become commander of the East China Sea Fleet and Minister of Communications, led the Fifth Battalion from Longmen through Xiangyun’s Jiaoling, Anbangge, Futian, and Shaxi, and stationed in “Xinghou,” where they unexpectedly raided and destroyed the stronghold of Wu Ying, head of the Tong’an puppet militia, at Wufeng. Yin Renping, former Deputy Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, also worked in Xiangyun. In the later stages of the Second Revolutionary Civil War, due to the brutal suppression by the reactionary Kuomintang forces, many revolutionary comrades in the Longmen area were tragically killed, while others were forced to flee afar or went underground, pushing the revolution into a low tide.
During the revolutionary struggle, outstanding party members and armed fighters such as Liang Changzhi, Liang Jinquan, Zhuo Xiaomei, Zhuo Hengjian, and Liang Kunxing sacrificed their lives heroically, and uprising officer Wang Wenbi also died a valiant death. In the battle to defend the newly established people’s government, Liao Shi, Liao Yiyuan, and Liao Zhenli also gave their young lives. The revolutionary spirit and heroic deeds of these martyrs will forever be worthy of the respect, study, and inheritance of future generations.
The Xiangyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Monument was designated as a county-level cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Nan’an County in March 1983, recognized as a Nan’an City Patriotic Education Base by the CCP Nan’an Municipal Committee and Nan’an Municipal People’s Government in December 1994, and announced as a Nan’an City National Defense Education Base by the People’s Government of Nan’an City in October 2001.
