Former Site of the Minzhong Guerrilla Detachment Base

The former site of the Minzhong Guerrilla Detachment Base is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of the Minzhong Guerrilla Detachment Base, Ku Zhu Temple, is located in Toutou Natural Village, Xiazha Village, Xitianwei Town, Licheng District, Putian City.

On December 26, 1936, Chen Guozhu mobilized peasants in his hometown, Xiazha Village, and established a Peasant Association at Ku Zhu Temple to carry out struggles against taxes and levies. From 1946 to the spring of 1948, Huang Guozhang, Secretary of the Minzhong Regional Committee of the CCP, along with Zhang Kun and Lin Ruliang, members of the Putian Working Committee, successively led guerrilla forces here to carry out covert activities. They developed over 30 guerrillas and more than 20 underground liaisons, forming several guerrilla groups to engage in struggles such as “resisting conscription, rejecting forced labor, reducing rents, and lowering interest rates.” In late 1948, Zhang Kun and Lin Ruliang held multiple secret meetings of the underground party here to reorganize the guerrilla forces and train their core members.

The former site of the Minzhong Guerrilla Detachment Base is Ku Zhu Temple, built during the Huichang era of the Tang Dynasty. It is a thousand-year-old temple that at its peak oversaw numerous temples within a hundred-mile radius. The temple is a single-story earthen and wooden structure facing south, surrounded by mountains. Originally covering nearly 10,000 square meters, it included not only upper and lower halls but also 120 meditation rooms. Due to damage from human activity and natural factors, it now covers approximately 600 square meters. The main gate and remnants of the broken wall are hidden among weeds, with only the upper and lower halls and about ten rooms in the eastern wing remaining.

Xiatuzhai Village in Xitianwei Town is located at the foot of Jiuhua Mountain, 16 kilometers from the town center. It currently has 17 villager groups, 418 households, and a total population of 1,982, including 63 Party members.
