Former Site of the Jinshan Transport Station
The Former Site of the Jinshan Transport Station is a classic destination on China’s red tourism trail.
The Former Site of the Jinshan Transport Station is located in Haitou Natural Village, Jinshan Village, Huangshi Town, Licheng District, Putian City.
Zhu Weigan, a native of Jinshan Village in Huangshi Town, was a well-known historian and educator. He devoted his life to the pursuit of progress and supported the revolution. He maintained close relationships with revolutionary comrades from central Fujian, including Chen Guozhu, Chen Guozhen, and Lin Runan. These comrades used his home as a base to establish a transport station, grow their revolutionary forces, and carry out revolutionary activities.
In 1923, while studying at Xiamen University, Chen Guozhu met his teacher Zhu Weigan, and the two became close friends. In 1925, Chen Guozhu was sent back to Putian by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to establish the Party there. Upon arriving in Putian, Zhu Weigan recommended him to teach at Putian Zheli Middle School. In February 1926, Chen Guozhu established a joint CCP and Communist Youth League branch at Zheli Middle School. Afterward, he often visited Huangshi Jinshan Village and used Zhu Weigan’s home (ancestral house) as a base to carry out activities and recruit Party members. On November 25 of the same year, Chen Guozhu and others, under the name of the Preparatory Office of the Kuomintang Putian County Committee, held a military-welcome assembly in Zhongshan Park (now Wenxian Square) to welcome the victorious entry of the Northern Expeditionary Army into Putian. The event was chaired by Chen Guozhu, who specially invited Mr. Zhu Weigan to speak as a representative of the education sector. Zhu called on peasants to fight against local tyrants and evil gentry, implement a 25% rent reduction, oppose salt taxes, and clarify the goals and tasks of the revolutionary struggle at that stage. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Zhu Weigan actively participated in anti-Japanese salvation activities. Back at his hometown in Jinshan, he wrote articles for publications such as Shilun and Kangdi Zhishi, founded by Cai Gongbei, to vigorously promote the resistance effort.
Chen Guozhu’s elder brother, Chen Guozhen, had long been engaged in revolutionary work in other regions. In April of the same year, shortly after returning to his long-absent hometown, he was betrayed by local informants. After evading detectives, he fled overnight to Xiamen. His wife and daughter were taken in by Zhu Weigan, who ensured their safety and livelihood. In November 1946, Lin Runan, a member of the Central Fujian Committee of the Communist Party of China, was ordered to return to Putian to carry out work, develop armed forces, and prepare for the launch of guerrilla warfare. During this period, Lin Runan frequently visited Zhu Weigan’s home (former residence), went deep into Jinshan Village, and mobilized progressive masses to join the revolution and the guerrilla forces. While in Jinshan, Lin Runan’s courier was Zhu Weigan’s nephew, Zhu Qiming. In July 1947, Lin Runan led the Daiyun Column into the Daiyun Mountains to open up a new base area but suffered heavy losses due to enemy encirclement and suppression. When revolutionary funds were tight, Zhu Weigan generously contributed money to support the cause. Influenced by him, Zhu Weigan’s children, Zhu Xu and Zhu Qiyong, joined the underground Party organization one after another and embarked on the path of revolution.
The Former Site of the Jinshan Transport Station is Zhu Weigan’s former residence, consisting of two buildings. The ancestral house is relatively well-preserved, facing south with a north orientation. It is a two-story building made of earth and wood, with a brick-paved courtyard of about 30 square meters in front, covering a total area of 400 square meters. The residence also includes a two-story brick-and-tile structure built in 1942, consisting of front and rear sections. It was later damaged, and now only parts of the first floor and the foundation remain.
