Guo Shangxian (1785–1832), a native of Shucang Lane in the city of Putian, styled himself Lan Shi. He became a Jinshi (advanced scholar) in the 14th year of the Jiaqing reign (1809) and rose to the position of Minister of the Court of Judicial Review. He was well-read and skilled in literature, excelled in painting orchids and bamboo, and his calligraphy, modeled after Zhao Mengfu and Dong Qichang, was elegant and vigorous, naturally formed, earning the admiration of Emperor Jiaqing. Both Japan and Korea (Joseon) competed to acquire his works. During the Qing Dynasty, calligraphy in its early period was dominated by the style of model-book calligraphy and the official-court style, with admiration for Zhao and Dong reaching its peak. However, the era also saw “literary inquisitions,” which silenced scholars, causing many to turn to epigraphic research.
