Zhouning Bore Temple

Zhouning Bore Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Bore Temple is located beside Yuanlin Bridge at the end of Chunchi Village. It was first built in the second year of the Tiancheng era of the Later Tang Dynasty (927 AD) by the founding ancestor of the Xu family from Xiaban, Chunchi. It was expanded in the first year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty (1341 AD) and renovated in the sixteenth year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1836 AD). In December 1985, the Heavenly King Hall was demolished and rebuilt. In the late 1990s, during the construction of the Qingshan Reservoir project, an attempt to relocate the temple failed. Later, due to the reservoir filling up, the Maitreya Hall was submerged and subsequently demolished. During high water levels, the Mahavira Hall was also partially submerged. Later, with the construction of a cofferdam, the scale of Bore Temple gradually shrank.

Historical Records

According to the Shouning Dazhi (Records of Shouning), the temple received an annual allowance of seven qian, nine fen, and two li, which was several qian more than that of other temples within the county (referring to Shouning County, where Chunchi was under its jurisdiction at the time).

The Jianfeng Hall Record of Bore Nunnery describes it as follows: “In our village, there are two temples, both established long ago. One is situated north of the village, the other south. One serves as a sacred site for the Buddha, the other as a fengshui guardian for Chunjiang (now Chunchi). It is surrounded by verdant phoenix trees and emerald bamboo, competing in beauty with exquisite grasses and rare flowers. Red cliffs and green walls showcase their wonder, offering a unique atmosphere. In front of the temple flows a clear, rushing stream, with floating mist and warm green hues taking on a thousand forms—truly one of the scenic highlights of Chunjiang.”
