YanShang Filial Piety Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.

YanShang Filial Piety Archway

Era: Qing Dynasty

Location: Yanshang Village, Lixin Town, Jianning County

Introduction: Comprising two stone archways on the left and right with a roadside pavilion built in between, the structure has a rectangular floor plan covering an area of 22.33 square meters. The entire archway is constructed of stone, with a total height of 6.38 meters. Both stone archways feature a four-pillar, three-bay, five-story design. The front of the lintel above the gate is engraved in intaglio with the text “In Commendation of Madam Xie, Wife of Confucian Scholar Zhang Weilan.” Above the lintel is a plaque engraved in relief with the characters “Filial Piety,” while the side inscribed stelae record in intaglio the names of Zhang Dabin, his descendants and sons-in-law, the stone masons who built the archway, the officials involved, and the construction date.

Protected Area: Centered on the archway, extending 100 meters east along the ancient post road to the paddy fields, 120 meters west along the ancient post road to the Yanshang Village Committee, 10 meters north to the foot of the mountain, and 100 meters south to the vicinity of the mountain base.

In 2009, the YanShang Filial Piety Archway was designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Yanshang Village: Located at the border between Fujian and Jiangxi provinces in Lixin Town, Jianning County, Yanshang Village sits at an altitude of 790 meters. It administers 3 natural villages and 7 villager groups, with a total of 186 households and 802 residents. The village has 19,630 mu of mountainous land and 2,182 mu of arable land, including 17,500 mu of forested land, 100 mu of dry land, and is primarily engaged in industries such as rice farming, seed production, yellow pear cultivation, lotus seed production, flue-cured tobacco, and edible fungi. It is a typical agricultural village.
