Mao Zedong Built the West Gate Lotus Pond

Mao Zedong Built the West Gate Lotus Pond serves as a science education base.

Mao Zedong Built the West Gate Lotus Pond is located outside the west gate of Jianning County, in Chengguan Village, Suixi Town, Jianning County.

On May 31, 1931, after the Red Army captured Jianning County and achieved a complete victory in the Second Anti-Encirclement Campaign, the headquarters of the First Front Red Army (General Front Committee and General Headquarters) stayed in Jianning for over 40 days. During his time working in Jianning, in addition to directing Red Army combat operations, Mao Zedong also placed great emphasis on local work. Upon arriving in Jianning, he familiarized himself with the county’s conditions, geography, and local customs. In his spare time, Mao also led his guards to help local residents repair lotus ponds damaged by Kuomintang troops during their fortification work, and he personally oversaw the digging of a new lotus pond — the West Gate Lotus Pond.
