Tomb of Martyr Wu Jingtai

The Tomb of Martyr Wu Jingtai is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Tomb of Martyr Wu Jingtai is located on the summit of Qingyun Ridge on the western side of the northern section of Zhongshan North Road in Xinsheng Community, Suixi Town, Jianning County, within the Jianning Martyrs' Cemetery in the northern part of Jianning County.

Wu Jingtai, originally named Qiangbao, was from Wujin County, Jiangsu Province. After graduating from junior high school, she attended Huili Girls' School in Nanjing. In 1926, she enrolled in the Department of Sociology at Shanghai University and soon joined the Communist Party of China. In October, the Women's Movement Committee of the Shanghai District Committee of the CPC was established, and Wu Jingtai served as a committee member, responsible for women's movement work in the Yangshupu and Xiaoshadu worker districts. During this time, she married Yu Zehong. After Chiang Kai-shek launched the April 12 Counterrevolutionary Coup, Wu Jingtai and Yu Zehong were assigned by the Party organization to work in Wuhan, Shanghai, and other places. In the autumn of 1931, Wu Jingtai and Yu Zehong entered the Central Soviet Area. In 1932, Wu Jingtai served as the head of the Women’s Department of the Ningdu Central County Committee of the CPC. In January 1933, she was transferred to the Jianning Central County Committee of the CPC as the Minister of Propaganda and Secretary of the Women’s Committee. In April 1933, Wu Jingtai went to Ningdu to attend an expanded meeting of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the CPC on Red Army recruitment. On her way back, she was ambushed by members of the Big Sword Society at Huangnitán in Shuangxikou, Jianning County. To cover the retreat of her comrades and local residents, she returned fire and was fatally shot. Her remains were later transported back to Jianning County and buried at Fengshan in the northwest of the county town. In 1970, while students from Jianning No. 1 Middle School were working at Fengshan, they unearthed a gravestone. The gravestone had a round top, measuring 0.56 meters in height and 0.28 meters in width, with the inscription “Tomb of Comrade Wu Jingtai” carved in regular script and in intaglio in the center, and “Erected by Yu Zehong, April 29, 1933” carved in regular script in the lower left corner. Several fragments of Wu Jingtai’s bones, two bronze five-pointed star buttons, and one bronze belt buckle were also unearthed. In 1981, the Jianning County People’s Government decided to build the Jianning County Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery on Qingyun Ridge. In October of the same year, Wu Jingtai’s remains were reinterred in the cemetery, and a gravestone and tomb were erected.

The Tomb of Martyr Wu Jingtai faces east and is built with granite in a rectangular shape, covering an area of 26.6 square meters. The tombstone is 2.4 meters tall, with the inscription “Tomb of Martyr Wu Jingtai” in regular script on the front and a brief biography of her life on the back.
