Former Site of the Guidyang Guerrilla Unit

The former site of the Guidyang Guerrilla Unit is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Zhangwang Temple at the former site of the Guidyang Guerrilla Unit is located 8 meters directly opposite No. 97, Xinjie, Guidyang Village, Huangbu Township, Jianning County.

After the victory in the First Counter-Encirclement Campaign in the Central Soviet Area, the Red Army units entered the regions of Jianning, Nanfeng, and Guangchang to raise funds. From January to March 1931, the Red Army entered villages in the northwestern part of Jianning such as Lixin, Lutian, Ningjiayuan, Shuinanqiao, Yanshang, Guidyang, Chenyu, and Xianhe from directions including Fu Fang in Nanfeng and Chen Zhuang in Guangchang, defeated the local landlord armed defense groups in each village, publicized the programs and policies of the Party and the Red Army, and carried out activities such as fighting landlords and redistributing their wealth, raising grain and funds, expanding the Red Army, and developing revolutionary activists. In Guidyang Village, over 100 activists were quickly developed among the masses, and a farmers' association was organized. From among the backbone members of the farmers' associations in Guidyang, Chenjiapai, and Tianluoshang and other villages, the first red local revolutionary armed force in Jianning County under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party — the Guidyang Guerrilla Unit — was formed. The first group to join the guerrilla unit included over 30 people such as Zhang Guowei, Li Kexiong, Zhang Xiaoyu, Zhang Yungui, Zhang Guiming, and Liu Nanfeng, divided into three squads, with Zhang Guowei serving as captain and Xia Xiaoxi as political instructor. To expand publicity, on February 21, the Guidyang Guerrilla Unit held its founding assembly in the Zhangwang Temple at the center of Guidyang Street. After the meeting, Zhang Guowei led the guerrilla members to rush into the home of Zhang Binggang, the head of the defense group, who held the rank of colonel and was a major local gentry, opened the grain storage to distribute food, and shared pigs, cattle, chickens, ducks, clothing, and other valuables with the poor. Soon after, the guerrilla unit learned that Zhang Binggang had transported a batch of firearms back from the county seat, so they surrounded his home late at night to conduct a search and discovered 10 brand-new firearms buried underground in a lime and manure pit. With weapons in hand, the guerrilla unit also targeted landlords in the households of Zhang Zuolin, Zhang Qingpu, and Tang Puzhu, and apart from using a portion of the confiscated valuables and fines for the operational expenses of the farmers' association and the guerrilla unit, most of it was handed over to the Red Army work team. In June 1931, the Guidyang Guerrilla Unit was incorporated into the 3rd Company of the Independent Regiment of Nan-Guang-Jian of the Red Army.

The Zhangwang Temple at the former site of the Guidyang Guerrilla Unit was originally built during the Qing Dynasty. It faces west and is built along an east-west axis, with a brick-and-wood structure and a post-and-lintel wooden frame, featuring a flush-gable roof. It has a total width of 18 meters and a total depth of 23 meters, consisting of a lower hall, an atrium, and an upper hall, covering a floor area of 514 square meters. It served as a site for the Zhang family descendants to worship their ancestors.
