Zhuma Fortification Battle Site

The Zhuma Fortification Battle Site is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Zhuma Fortification Battle Site is located between Mayuan Village, Tongyuan Village, and Banyuan Village in Xikou Town, and Anyin Village in Huangfang Township, approximately 20 li (Chinese miles) north of Jianning County.

Zhuma Fortification is situated about 20 li north of Jianning City, surrounded by numerous villages and a dense population, and functioned as the third defensive line to the northeast of Jianning. The Zhuma Fortification Battle was a continuation of the Battle of General’s Temple, commanded by Lin Biao and Nie Rongzhen. Participating Red Army forces included parts of the 1st Division and 2nd Division of the 1st Red Army Corps, elements from the 5th Red Army Corps and the 7th Red Army Corps, as well as the 3rd and 21st Divisions of the 9th Red Army Corps. Nationalist forces involved were the 5th Division, 96th Division, 98th Division, along with one regiment from the 13th Division, all under the command of Zhou Hunyuan. On May 15, 1934, Nationalist troops launched a three-pronged offensive against the Red Army positions. Around 8:00 AM, two enemy regiments attacked the position held by the 21st Red Army Division on Piziling Heights, bombarding the area heavily with aircraft and mountain artillery. The Red Army withdrew from the battle, and Piziling was captured by the enemy. Soon after, the enemy concentrated forces to besiege the position of the 5th Red Army Regiment. Around 9:00 AM, enemy aircraft and artillery bombarded the 5th Regiment’s position intensely. The 4th Regiment, 6th Regiment, and the headquarters of the 2nd Division of the Red Army withdrew from their positions under the cover of the 5th Regiment. Subsequently, the 5th Regiment organized a suicide squad composed of the 2nd and 3rd Battalions and the special service company, which charged fiercely under the leadership of the 3rd Battalion commander, breaking through enemy lines and successfully breaking out. By 11:00 AM, the high ground west of Zhuma Fortification had been taken by the enemy. In the afternoon, the enemy ceased their attacks to repair trenches and prepare for nighttime combat. Deep into the night, the main Red Army force moved southwest toward Jianning. By dawn on the 16th, the enemy had occupied Zhuma Fortification.
