Former Site of Zhongshan Township Farmers' Association

The former site of Zhongshan Township Farmers' Association is a cultural relic protection unit of Sanming City and a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of Zhongshan Township Farmers' Association is located in the Xianxian Temple in the southwestern part of Zhongshan Village, Yanqian Town, Sanyuan District, Sanming City.

In April 1934, after the Battle of Tongtiegling in Mingxi, the Red 7th Army Corps moved southward via Sanyuan Yanqian and Zhongshan, passing through Gongchuan, using Zhongshan, Gongchuan, and other areas as rear bases to attack Yong’an County. During this period, the Red 7th Army Corps left a company stationed in Zhongshan Village.

This small Red Army unit was tasked with providing eastern security and carried out propaganda and campaigns against local tyrants in Zhongshan Village. They quickly mobilized the awakened masses, establishing a Party branch, a farmers' association, and a Soviet government. The Party branch branch secretary, farmers’ association chairman, and Soviet government chairman were all Deng Tianci; the vice-chairman was Yang Pingzhi, and the secretary and clerk was Yu Cijiao. After the establishment of the Party branch, farmers’ association, and Soviet government, they held multiple meetings in the Xianxian Temple and convened mass gatherings in the front square. They distributed grain and pork confiscated from local tyrants to the people, mobilized youth to join the Red Army, formed the Zhongshan Red Guards, carried out land redistribution campaigns, assisted the Red Army in eliminating the Big Sword Society organization around Xingqiao, organized the masses to actively support the attack on Yong’an County, and after victory, transported the spoils to the Central Soviet Area. After the Red 7th Army Corps unit departed, the Red Army’s Independent 9th Regiment guided the work of the Party branch, farmers’ association, and Soviet government until the end of 1934.

The building faces west and has its entrance facing the confluence of the Renxi and Daxi streams. It covers an area of over 700 square meters, with a built-up area of over 500 square meters. It consists of a front square, lower hall, corridor, courtyard, side rooms, and upper hall. The mountain gate features a hip-and-gable roof, while the upper hall is a suspended gable roof structure made of wood and stone. The upper hall is five bays wide and three bays deep, with a stone foundation and brick-paved floor. It exhibits architectural characteristics of the Yuan Dynasty.

In March 1991, it was approved by the Sanming Municipal People's Government as the “Second Batch of Cultural Relic Protection Units of Sanming City.”
