Former Site of Taiyangshan in Shufang, Jianyang
In early May 1942, the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party broke through the second military encirclement by the diehard faction of the Kuomintang, relocating from Zhangshuyuan in Shaowu to Nandingdingcuo Village at the foot of Taiyangshan in Shufang Township, Jianyang, where it continued to lead the people of the entire province in the struggle against Japan and the diehards.
As the diehard faction’s second military offensive had failed and they were unable to launch a new attack on the northern Fujian base area in the short term, coupled with the Japanese halting their invasion along the Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway, Taiyangshan entered a relatively stable period. The Provincial Committee seized this opportunity and first launched a rectification and training campaign on the mountain aimed at improving the political and military quality of cadres and troops. Worker, peasant, and intellectual cadres engaged in underground work in cities from northern, eastern, and central Fujian participated in this rectification. In February 1943, the Provincial Committee also opened the fifth session of the Wuyi Cadre School on the mountain, where documents such as the Central Committee and Provincial Committee decisions on strengthening party spirit, as well as Mao Zedong’s reports including "Rectify Our Study" and "Reform Our Study Style," were studied. The school also founded two theoretical publications: "Tempering" and "Study."
The rectification on Taiyangshan and the opening of the fifth session of the Wuyi Cadre School constituted a widespread Marxist education movement within the Fujian Party organization. Through the rectification study, the party spirit of the majority of Party members was strengthened, the combat effectiveness of various departments in the base area was improved, and a solid ideological foundation was laid for defeating the third military encirclement launched by the diehard faction of the Kuomintang and securing the ultimate victory in the struggle against Japan and the diehards.
In April 1943, the diehard faction of the Kuomintang launched the third military encirclement against the northern Fujian base area. The Provincial Committee remained calm in the face of danger and, with the support of the people in the Taiyangshan mountainous region, implemented the policy of “concealment and consolidation,” dealing a heavy blow to the diehard troops. However, at this time, the Japanese intensified their invasion of coastal areas, and the Kuomintang authorities in Fujian, fearful of the Japanese, relocated their various agencies inland one after another to avoid the enemy. The Provincial Committee analyzed the situation, assessed the circumstances, and decided to move the leadership center to central Fujian to lead the masses in the fight against Japan more closely. Starting in September 1943, the Provincial Committee’s offices were moved to central Fujian, but Taiyangshan remained a guerrilla base area for the anti-diehard resistance of the people of northern Fujian.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Jianyang County Committee and County Government of the Chinese Communist Party erected a Taiyangshan Memorial Monument in Tanshan Park in Chengguan, and Shufang Township also established a Taiyangshan Revolutionary Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall locally for people to visit and learn from.
