Former Site of the Command Post of the Hou Tian Uprising

The Former Site of the Command Post of the Hou Tian Uprising is a cultural heritage site of Fujian Province and a classic red tourism destination.

The Former Site of the Command Post of the Hou Tian Uprising, the Huoxing Ancestral Hall, is a provincial-level cultural heritage site located in Hou Tian Village, Dongxiao, covering an area of 500 square meters. On March 4, 1928, Luo Huaisheng, Guo Diren, Deng Zihui, and other leaders of the Longyan County Committee of the Communist Party of China organized an armed uprising of local peasants here. They broke open granaries to distribute grain, burned land deeds and debt contracts, and fired the first shot of the Fujian Peasant Armed Uprising.

The Hou Tian Uprising Memorial is located at the southern foot of Nanshan Mountain in Hou Tian Village, Dongxiao Town, Xinluo District, Longyan City. It is the ancestral hall of the Chen family in Hou Tian Village, built in the late Qing Dynasty. It was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1910. The site is a single-hall, two-wing, two-side-room-style earthen building with a total area of approximately 480 square meters. The Huoxing Ancestral Hall was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site by the People's Government of Fujian Province in 1961. In 1963, the Hou Tian Uprising Memorial was established here. It underwent three rounds of additions and revisions in 1978, 1988, and 2004. In 2008, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Hou Tian Uprising, we seized this valuable resource for national defense education. With the purpose of "promoting revolutionary traditions and highlighting the spirit of the old revolutionary base areas," we re-planned the Hou Tian Uprising Memorial, invested heavily in renovating the site, and newly built facilities such as the Hou Tian Uprising Memorial Square, exhibition rooms, and large permanent slogans. The exhibition content is divided into three parts: 1. Social Overview and the Spread of Marxism-Leninism; 2. Mobilizing the Masses for Armed Uprising; 3. Persevering in the Struggle with the Red Flag Unfurled.

On March 4, 1928 (the 13th day of the second lunar month), in accordance with the spirit of the CPC’s August 7th Meeting, the Provisional County Committee of the Communist Party of China in Longyan led an armed uprising of local peasants in Hou Tian. They defeated the landlords’ militia known as the “Elders’ Association,” burned land deeds and debt contracts, and confiscated the grain and wealth of the landlords. The Hou Tian Uprising fired the first shot of the Fujian Peasant Armed Uprising, marking the beginning of armed struggle in Fujian and heralding the land revolution in the province. With its heroic history of struggle, the Hou Tian Uprising achieved five “firsts” in the revolutionary history of Fujian and even China: 1. Fired the first shot of armed struggle in Fujian; 2. Established the first Red armed force in Fujian; 3. The Hou Tian Branch of the Communist Party of China established here was one of the earliest rural party branches in Fujian; 4. Trained Fujian’s first peasant party member and first female rural party member; 5. Sustained armed struggle to defend the fruits of the land revolution, making it the region with the longest duration of land protection struggles in the country. With its glorious achievements, the Hou Tian Uprising will forever be recorded in the annals of China’s revolution.
