Hotel Shilla to Build “Traditional Hanok” Inn, Within Walking Distance of Seoul’s World Heritage Sites

Accordingto Korean media outlet Koreaherald,the Seoul Metropolitan Government has approved the latest plan proposed by Hotel Shilla to developa “traditional hanok” (hanok)-style hotel,which will offer travelers a very unique experience in the future.
Hotel Shilla, a subsidiary of the Samsung Group, recently received approval from the Seoul government for its hanok hotel project, to be located in Jongno’s Jongno 3(sam)-ga area, also known as Jongchung-dong. In fact, this plan has been proposed multiple times but has been controversial due to potential issues of harming the natural environment.
The final version has been revised to a scaled-down plan, including 91 guest rooms, down from the original 207, along with added walking paths that allow visitors to stroll to the ancient city walls.
Officials hope to strengthen Seoul’s competitiveness in heritage tourism, as the fortress wall has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hanok hotel section is expected to begin operations around 2020.
