Cliff Inscriptions at Longyan Cave
The cliff inscriptions at Longyan Cave are a cultural heritage site protected by Fujian Province.
The cliff inscriptions at Longyan Cave are located on Qilin Mountain in Houyu Village, Nancheng, Xinluo District, Longyan City. Discovered during the Jin Dynasty, they span an area of 5,000 square meters. The main cave contains thick accumulations where stone drills, stone knives, and fragments of gray, hard pottery have been collected. Near the entrance of a branch cave, a small amount of ash and fossils of late Quaternary mammals have been found. The inner walls of the main cave feature over 20 cliff inscriptions from the Ming and Qing dynasties, in scripts including regular script, clerical script, running script, and cursive script. In the second year of the Jingtai era of the Ming Dynasty (1451), Wang Yuan, Prefect of Chaozhou, inscribed "Record of Longyan," describing the geographical location and scenic features of Longyan Cave. The city of Longyan derives its name from this cave. It was designated as a cultural heritage site protected by Fujian Province in 2005.
