Xiaozhan Training Camp Park is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a patriotic education base.

Xiaozhan Training Camp Park is located in Xiaozhan Town, Jinnan District, covering an area of approximately 300 acres with a total investment of over 320 million yuan and a total construction area of 87,700 square meters. Completed in 2008, it is one of the key projects in Tianjin’s “Modern China Seen Through Tianjin” tourism initiative and is currently a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

In addition to building city walls, the Military Training Hall, a military museum, and the New Army Supervision Office, Xiaozhan Training Camp Park also includes Yuan Shikai’s Official Residence and the Bazaar Street. It centers around the history of the Beiyang Army, modern Tianjin culture, and Xiaozhan rice culture, using historical exhibitions and immersive experiences as core interactive features. The park also serves educational, leisure, shopping, and conference purposes as a story-driven historical and cultural tourism destination.

As the birthplace of China’s first modernized new-model army, Xiaozhan Training Camp Park boasts profound military cultural significance. Xiaozhan Town: Located between the Dagukou coastal defense and the urban area of Tianjin, it served as a strategic buffer between Beijing and Tianjin. Advancing, it could block enemy advances; retreating, it offered tactical flexibility, making it a historic garrison and defensive stronghold. After the Tianjin Massacre in 1870, Li Hongzhang, Viceroy of Zhili, deployed his subordinate Zhou Shengchuan’s “Sheng Army” to train in Machang, Qing County, Hebei, while also overseeing the construction of Xincheng Fort. To facilitate transportation, the Sheng Army built the Machang-Xincheng Road, establishing waystations along the route — every 20 kilometers a major station, every 5 kilometers a minor one. Hence, this small town earned its distinctive name — “Xiaozhan” (Minor Station).
