The Timber House on Youfang Street

The Timber House on Youfang Street, located at the northern end of Youfang Street in Xinyi Community, Xicheng Subdistrict, downtown, is a well-preserved and outstanding example of traditional residential architecture discovered during the third national cultural relics survey of Jieshou City in 2007. It features a rigorous structure, with wooden railings, small corridors, wooden staircases, and lattice wood doors and windows inside. The large fir beams, as thick as a person's embrace, are carved with patterns such as swirling clouds and floral designs, and the overall style is quite consistent with the residential architecture of the Suzhou-Shanghai area during the Republican era.

During the War of Resistance against Japan, Jieshou was a bustling hub of merchants and enjoyed a period of artificially inflated economic prosperity, earning it the nickname “Little Shanghai.” The timber house architectural complex that emerged from this era was originally quite extensive. It is understood that the Timber House on Youfang Street is not only unique to Jieshou but also the only surviving example of Republican-era architecture in the Huaibei region.
