Anhui Hui-Jing Theatre Pear Garden Stage

The Anhui Hui-Jing Theatre was formed on November 18, 2005, through the merger of the former Anhui Hui Opera Troupe and the Anhui Peking Opera Troupe.

The Anhui Hui Opera Troupe was established in 1956. Since its founding, it has rescued, excavated, collected, and documented nearly a thousand plays and a wealth of precious materials such as Hui opera vocal styles, music, and facial makeup. In 1959 and 1961, the troupe performed in public in Beijing, Shanghai, and other places, receiving high praise and expert guidance from renowned performing artists such as Mei Lanfang, Ma Lianliang, Zhang Junqiu, Zhou Xinfang, Yu Zhenfei, Gai Jiaotian, Ouyang Yuqian, Li Hongchun, Hou Xirui, and Li Yuru. In 1990, during the grand performance event commemorating the 200th anniversary of Hui troupes entering Beijing, the troupe once again caused a sensation in the capital with its distinctive artistic style.

Between 1991 and 1997, the troupe was invited to perform multiple times in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Japan; in the summer of 1999, it was invited to Spain to participate in the 20th International Pilgrimage Arts Festival, the Spanish Running of the Bulls Festival, and the Madrid Summer Arts Festival. The artists’ brilliant performances left a deep impression on local audiences and received high acclaim. In the 1950s, the troupe nurtured a group of outstanding performing artists and actors represented by Zhang Qixiang, Cao Shangli, and Qin Caiping; in the 1980s, it trained another generation including Li Longbin, Wang Danhong, and Zhang Min.

The preserved repertoire of Hui opera includes more than 50 major plays and outstanding traditional excerpts, such as "The Flooding of the Seven Armies," "The Drunken Concubine," "Crying Sword and Bitter Regret," "Meeting at Linjiang," "Legend of the White Snake," "The Later Story of Yang Guifei," "Nine Garments," "Blossoms Present a Sword," "Eternal Loyalty," "Lü Bu and Diao Chan," and "Liu Mingchuan." Among them, "Meeting at Linjiang" won the third Magnolia Award, "Crying Sword and Bitter Regret" won the fourth Magnolia Award, "Eternal Loyalty" received the Excellent Repertoire Award at the “The Finest Troupe Under Heaven” exhibition hosted by the Ministry of Culture, and "Liu Mingchuan" was awarded the eighth Wenhua New Repertoire Award by the Ministry of Culture and the ’97 China Cao Yu Drama Outstanding Repertoire Award.

The theatre currently has 160 employees, with 40% of them holding senior or higher professional titles. Many have won prestigious awards such as the China Drama “Plum Blossom” Award, Wenhua Award, Shanghai Drama “Magnolia” Award, China Cao Yu Drama Award, and China Opera “Red Plum” Award.

In the first national list of intangible cultural heritage announced by the State Council in 2006, the Hui opera declared by the theatre was included. The theatre’s application for the registered trademark “Hui Troupe” was approved by the National Copyright Administration.

The Anhui Hui-Jing Theatre primarily stages the national quintessence of Peking opera and the unique Anhui local opera, Hui opera. The theatre has accumulated a large number of outstanding traditional Peking opera and Hui opera repertoires, meeting the viewing needs of diverse audiences.

The Pear Garden Stage operated by the Anhui Hui-Jing Theatre features a stage suitable for opera performances and accommodates 300 seats. It now offers dedicated services for opera enthusiasts, including Peking opera performances, the Pear Garden Stage, and the Mythology Stage. With strong performance capabilities, modern stage equipment, and high-quality services, the theatre undertakes various types of performances.
