The Hutou Pool scenic area is located at Maocha River in Dushan Town at the foot of Xianghongdian Reservoir in Lu’an City, just over 100 kilometers from the provincial capital Hefei. The area enjoys convenient transportation, picturesque mountains, clear waters, and delightful scenery. The scenic spot got its name from a small hill that lies quietly on the bank of the Pihe River, resembling a tiger drinking water. The currents here are rapid, and the pool is unfathomably deep. According to elders’ legends: even four taels of yellow silk couldn’t touch the bottom. One summer, a person diving for fish at the bottom of the pool encountered a large, unidentifiable monster and was so frightened that they were terrified out of their wits. Since then, no one has dared to venture to the bottom of the pool again. The earliest development of Hutou Pool that I can recall dates back to the 1960s and 1970s, when a pumping station was built here to ensure drinking water for the local garrison, guarded by soldiers. On the water surface, the eight red characters “Stay Alert, Defend the Motherland” still stand tall. That scene left an indelible impression on my young heart.

The true development of Hutou Pool only began in recent years. A simple arched bridge spans the Pihe River, connecting the north and south into one. Cement roads have been built on both banks of the Pihe River, making it convenient for visitors traveling from all directions. The most thrilling experience should be the exciting rafting, from the pumped-storage power station dam to Hutou Pool. This stretch is full of rapids and whirlpools (but safety is absolutely assured). Sitting on a rubber raft and drifting downstream, you can take in the lush green mountains and waters on both sides. While you enjoy the scenery from the water, the visitors on shore also admire you as part of the Hutou Pool scenic area. After getting ashore, you can explore the national defense air-raid shelter and experience the spirit of the entire population preparing for war. Upon exiting the cave, you climb steps up to the hill next to Hutou Pool. From there, you can take a single-person cable slide to fly across the surging Pihe River—an exhilarating and thrilling experience like no other!

Of course, development here is still in its early stages. Various amusement facilities need to be further expanded, tourism resources at different sites require better integration, and deeper exploration still needs more planning. However, we have every reason to believe that this pearl embedded in the Pihe River will increasingly radiate boundless vitality and brilliance!
