The Ancestral Temple of the Meng Family
The Ancestral Temple of the Meng Family is a cultural tourism attraction.
The Ancestral Temple of the Meng Family is located on Bo’ai Road in the former Italian Concession. Built in 1912, it is the most well-preserved Sino-Western architectural complex existing today. It was once a place where the founders of Qianxiangyi came to worship their ancestors. It is said that the Meng family were descendants of Mencius from Zou County, Shandong, though not from the direct lineage, and later relocated to Jiujun Town, Zhangqiu County. The Meng family became the wealthiest in the region and were commonly referred to as the "clan-named families", namely San Nu Tang, Qi Nu Tang, Rong Nu Tang, Jin Nu Tang, Jin Xiu Tang, and Shen Si Tang. These several “clan-named” branches of the Meng family separated and went their own ways in the late Qing Dynasty, each managing their respective businesses independently. Ruifuxiang belonged to the Jin Nu Tang branch, Qianxiangyi, Yihe Xiang, and Longxiang belonged to the Jin Xiu Tang branch, Ruishengxiang belonged to the Qi Nu Tang branch, Ruizengxiang belonged to the Rong Nu Tang branch, Qingxiang belonged to the San Nu Tang branch, and Ruilinxiang belonged to the Shen Si Tang branch. The silk and satin shops established by the Meng family all included the character “Xiang” (祥), such as Ruifuxiang, Qianxiangyi, Yihe Xiang, Longxiang, Ruishengxiang, Ruizengxiang, Qingxiang, and Ruilinxiang, collectively known as the “Eight Great Xiangs”. Their businesses spanned large, medium, and small cities across China, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shenyang, Hankou, Jinan, Qingdao, Yantai, Zhoucun, Baoding, Zhengzhou, and Harbin. The Ancestral Temple of the Meng Family was the family temple of the Jin Xiu Tang branch’s Meng Yangxuan. Meng Yangxuan once lived here, and the place was also once used as a warehouse for the Meng family's silk business. Meng Yangxuan (1891–1953), whose given name was Guangchen, founded the Qianxiangyi Cloth Store in Tianjin in 1919. He subsequently set up Baoji Qianxiangyi Cloth Store on Guyi Street and Chenji Qianxiangyi Cloth Store on Binjiang Avenue. The Qianxiangyi stores he operated gained fame both domestically and internationally. The Ancestral Temple of the Meng Family is a three-story brick-and-wood structure with two-story side wings on the east and west, spanning five bays in width, and laid out in a square-shaped “口” configuration, forming a courtyard-style quadrangle. The central courtyard is open-skylit, with the main house and side wings connected by continuous eaves corridors, adorned with carved floral motifs, lintels, and decorations. All doors and windows feature arched designs. The front building and the rear slopes of the side wing rooftops serve as terraces. The architectural style is simple and elegant, boldly incorporating the strengths of both Chinese and Western building traditions, making it a typical example of eclecticism architecture and a testament to the cultural exchange between China and the West in modern Tianjin.
